Scouting For Food

About Scouting For Food

As Scouts, we know how fortunate we are to have a warm meal every night – whether around the campfire or at the kitchen table. And we know that not everyone is so lucky.

That’s the genesis of Scouting for Food, the annual food-collection drive run by the Theodore Roosevelt Council. It’s another reminder that Scouts are here in our local communities, doing good turns. The Scouting for Food Drive began as a National Good Turn in 1988 as a two-year “National Good Turn” food-collection program is still going strong 36 years later. Our Scout Oath calls on our young people to “help other people at all times,” and Scouting for Food demonstrates to the nation how our movement can make a difference in their communities. Serving others has always been what the BSA does best.

If we all chip in then Long Island’s children, seniors, veterans, and active U.S. service members should never have to worry where their next meal will come from.

Some of the local agencies that we are partnered with are:

The INN: Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen – 100 Madison Ave, Hempstead, NY 11550

As a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization, The INN provides a broad variety of essential services to assist those challenged by hunger, homelessness, and profound poverty.

Island Harvest:  Melville location: 126 Spagnoli Road, Melville NY 11747 or Uniondale location: 875 Jerusalem Ave, Uniondale NY 11553

Island Harvest is among the region’s foremost agencies in emergency response readiness for food, product, resource distribution, and support, and is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief organization. Island Harvest is proud to earn consistent four-star ratings by Charity Navigator, an indication of quality in the non-profit sector.

This year, every Scout that participates will receive the 2025 Scouting for Food patch! Click here to submit how much food your unit donated.
